HOW PRESENTATIONS WORK
At the present time, Career Counselors receive requests for classroom presentations via this website. Career Counselors are also welcome to approach schools or teachers on their own initiative and invite teachers to participate in the program.
When a teacher goes to the Guard HOP website and requests a presentation, a Career Counselor is contacted. When requesting a presentation, the teacher may specify the war they would like presented.
The four wars available are:
- War of 1812
- Civil War
- World War I
- World War II
When contacted, the Career Counselor will visit the classroom and give a 35-minute PowerPoint Presentation, during which he will distribute Heritage Outreach Program Student Textbooks for the students to keep. The Career Counselor is supplied with a Career Counselor Guide to help organize the 35-minute presentation. The Career Counselor will also bring a trunk of historical items to the classroom, which will be provided by the Army National Guard. For further details on the Career Counselor presentation, including a time rubric, see the Career Counselor Guide.
Teachers are encouraged to work with Career Counselors to schedule a uniformed military historian to visit the class to enhance the presentation.
After the Career Counselor's presentation concludes, the teacher is encouraged to make use of the Teacher Guide provided by the Heritage Outreach Program. It is full of additional resources and activities that the teacher may use creatively in continuing the lesson theme after the Career Counselor leaves.
