PROGRAM FORMAT

The chosen themes for the Heritage Outreach Program (HOP) are the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I, and World War II. These four wars had momentous impact on America. Each war is presented separately in a 35-minute lesson by a National Guard Career Counselor. Teachers may select the war they would like presented to their class.

In addition to the Career Counselor presentation, students are given beautifully designed Student Textbooks featuring information on all four wars. Teachers are provided with resource materials that include a teacher's guide with learning objectives, critical thinking questions, and glossary of key terms.

Teachers are also provided with a valuable Teacher Guide that contains additional resources they may use to expound on the topic in their curriculum after the presentation concludes. The Teacher Guide includes discussion questions, objectives, evaluation questions, key terms, and supplemental writing and history projects.

Woven into this program are the U.S. Army values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. Our hope is that through this program teachers will further encourage their students' interest in America's military history.

When possible, teachers are encouraged to work with a Career Counselor to bring a uniformed military historian into the classroom to assist in the presentation. Having a living historian present is another exciting way for students to experience history in a dynamic setting. Contact a Career Counselor for additional information.
